Your first, well-ordered folder

Getting started.

From download to exact preview, here’s the practical path through EXIF Data Editor Pro.

01. Install or extract.

The signed Windows MSIX is the recommended installation. Download it from the download section, open the file, review the publisher in Windows, and choose Install. Launch the app from Start. Use Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later, or Windows 11, on an x64 PC. The .NET runtime is included.

Prefer a portable copy? Extract the entire ZIP into a normal writable folder. Keep Tools, its subfolders, and the supplied files beside ExifDataEditorPro.exe. Do not run inside the ZIP or move only the executable. The complete download includes the local visual model.

Explorer integration is available only in the portable edition. Use its Explorer integration screen or Install.cmd to install a per-user right-click command. On Windows 11 it appears under Show more options. The website MSIX and Store editions do not register an Explorer menu; use Open folder, Add images, or drag-and-drop instead.

Website releases are updated by downloading a newer version; this MSIX download does not provide automatic updates. Close any running copy before updating. Switching between portable and packaged editions may isolate preferences, history, and your saved OpenRouter connection. Do not assume those transfer automatically. Retain the original history and photo backup folders, and reconnect AI in the edition you use if needed.

02. Open your photos.

Use Open folder to replace the workspace, Add images to add files, or drag photos and folders into the app. Folder imports include subfolders. Removing a row or clearing the workspace never deletes a photo.

Start with a small set of copies while learning. An accepted extension does not guarantee every tag is writable or every RAW preview is available. Separate XMP sidecars and videos are not included.

03. Correct camera clocks.

Open Multi-Camera Sync. Name photographers and cameras, then assign each camera its own folder or detected body. Confirm assignments: camera metadata cannot establish who used a camera. Overlapping assignments are blocked.

Choose the Main reference clock. That camera stays fixed. For each other camera, enter a constant correction with earlier/later and hours, minutes, and seconds. Optional AI suggestions are starting estimates; inspect their photo evidence and fine-tune the time yourself.

Include only the corrections you want. Build the exact preview, inspect actual metadata differences, then apply. Sync does not automatically resolve time zones or changing clock drift.

If you choose optional AI assistance

Connect your own OpenRouter account from AI connection. You need internet access, a usable key, and provider credits. Upload consent is off until you enable it for an analysis. Selected upright JPEG previews have a maximum edge of 768 pixels and are stripped of metadata before being sent to Liquid through OpenRouter. Read the privacy notice before using photographs of people or private events.

04. Review metadata.

In Metadata Editor, filter by make, model, lens, filename, or other metadata. Select photos to change. Changing filters clears the previous selection so hidden photos are not included accidentally.

Choose Edit selected photos. Add supported changes: set a value, shift a time, shift a numeric value, or remove a tag. Combined time fields preserve existing subseconds and offsets. EXIF and XMP copies are not synchronized automatically.

Build exact preview edits full temporary copies and reads them back. Inspect differences and engine notes before applying. Not every displayed field is editable, and support varies by file.

05. Rename & reorder.

Enter a base name, choose a numbering style, and set the starting number, step, and minimum digits. Sort by capture time, filename, camera, or another available field, with optional camera grouping.

Review proposed filenames before choosing Rename images. Invalid names, duplicates, and occupied destinations are blocked. Files stay in their existing folders. Undo last rename checks hashes and applies to the latest completed rename batch only.

Keep the recovery trail.

Exact metadata previews use hidden .ExifExpert/staging photo folders. Applying retains full originals in .ExifExpert/backups. Allow approximately one extra full copy of selected photos; repeated batches retain more versions. There is no automatic backup cleanup.

History & restore previews recovery of a completed metadata batch. Restore newer edits to the same files first. Moving or renaming photos after editing can prevent restoration until expected paths are restored. Keep hidden photo-folder backups and local history while you need them.

Preferences, journals, analysis reports, caches, and the encrypted optional AI key use %LOCALAPPDATA%\ExifExpert. Let an Apply operation finish. If interrupted, use Recover interrupted edit. Uninstalling the app does not automatically remove photo backups.
